CGI researchers’ aim has always been to simulate or synthesize in a computer display or rendering, natural scenes as captured by a photographic device. The early, simple raytraced CG images by Lee Westover and Turner Whitted and the complex ones by Eric Haines and Donald Greenberg were astounding for their impressions of photographic fidelity. No matter what kind of algorithm is used, the goal of a computer-generated image is to have a photorealistic impression. Photorealism means resembling photography.

Although the behavior happens in various degrees, certain materials reflect more than transmit light or scatter it more than reflect it, but the various types of light interaction are always present. Light always interacts in the presence of suitable media. Light passing through film is no exception. It goes from the air to the plastic and then to the silver halide emulsion and then to the film’s antireflective coatings and out the other side. 1. Light passing though the film’s emulsion creates a primary image by directly interacting with the silver halides; in some areas, it passes directly through the film.

This kind of magnification also happens in the eye when light crosses from the outside air into the cornea, passes through the liquid in the eye, and enters the pupil. From the pupil, the lens bends the light further. The lens then modifies its shape to focus the light in the eye. The eye’s lens is like a variable zoom that makes it possible for us to focus as close as three inches and as far as into infinity.
