He was popular for the same reasons that Steele and Addison were, for his Whiggish views and a concern with the inner moral character. At least 44 different conduct works were imported or printed in New England between 1620–1738, including Richard Brathwait’s The English Gentleman and The English Gentlewoman and Richard Allestree’s The Ladies Calling. Both of these authors were royalists, godly, and appealed to the Puritan reader (Hemphill 1988: 18, 572). In addition to his novels, Samuel Richardson also anonymously wrote Letters Written to and for Particular Friends, intending it for country readers, and it was also very popular in America (Carson 1966: 38).

The colonists chose carefully of what they read and these selections were further modified by filtering them through the teachings of church sermons and parental admonitions. However, as researchers, we must begin with the overt statements that we know many in the past encountered and that formed the basis for many of the manners in their society. “To understand the lives of the American gentry, at least in their parlors and formal rooms, we must make an effort to recover life in this courtesy-book world” (Bushman 1993: 38).

But mannerly works—like Erasmus’s De civilitate— that crystallized during the Renaissance and continued to permeate society in the early modern period were certainly the most important form of courtesy instruction, selected and edited to suit the current practitioners.
